Norway expects to see oil and gas production rise by 3.8 per cent in the next year.
While production of both fuels requires equipment with hardfacing alloys and corrosion resistant alloys, oil output is expected to slow down as gas production rises.
"The decrease in oil production is more than offset by the high oil prices and increasing gas production. The result is an expected increase in the State’s net cash flow from the petroleum sector," said Terje Riis Johansen, minister of petroleum and energy.
Total oil production for 2008 is estimated at 2.4 million barrels per day, a drop from a year ago. The minister said he expected production to remain stable for a few years before declining.
Gas sales in 2008 were estimated at 96 billion cubic meters (bcm), a seven per cent increase on 2007, and are expected to rise to 106 billion cubic meters next year.
In the latest round of bidding for offshore exploration licences Norway received more than twice the bids as it did in the previous round in 2005.
