Xstrata, Europe's largest zinc producer, has called on the Australian government to save its McArthur River mine from closure.
Last month the government put a stop to the planned expansion of the mine.
According to Xstrata, stockpiles of lead and zinc ores are at "critically low levels" and expects the mine to close by the end of January without government support.
Xstrata Zinc Australia chief operating officer Brian Hearne said: "We are very keen to avoid incurring job losses and damage to the local economy."
Mr Hearne claimed the court case, which put a stop to the mine's expansion, was never about the merits of the application or the potential benefits and impacts of the project.
He claimed: “We are already in a difficult operating environment due to the global financial crisis and any further delay only serves to seriously compound the difficulties faced."
